EAU CLAIRE, Wis. - The UW-River Falls women's basketball team opened competition at the UW-Eau Claire Tip-Off Classic Friday evening, falling 76-72 against Ripon College in overtime.
The Falcons, now 0-2 overall, held a 67-64 lead after a
Kameri Meredith three-pointer with a minute and a half left in regulation, but after a Falcon turnover, Ripon capitalized with a three-pointer of their own to force overtime, tied 67-67. The Redhawks then outscored UWRF 9-5 in the overtime period to claim the six-point victory.
UWRF shot 28-for-62 from the field, 4-for-18 from three-point range, and 12-for-17 at the charity stripe. The Falcons led 33-32 on the glass and score more in the paint, 44-30.Â
Jenna Zeman scored a game-high 22 points, shooting 7-13, along with a team-high six rebounds.
Macy Nilsen added three steals.Â
After Ripon claimed a 10-point advantage after the first 10 minutes, the Falcons were strong in the second quarter, shooting 64 percent from the field while outscoring the Redhawks 24-14 to knot the score at 35-35 at halftime.
The Falcons and Redhawks were neck-and-neck in the second half, with scoring swings going both ways. A
Colie Justice layup a couple minutes into the second half gave UWRF a seven point lead, but Ripon closed out the third quarter on a 13-6 run to tie the game at 50 apiece heading into the final frame.
The fourth quarter featured seven lead changes until the three-point dramatics in the final minutes.
UW-River Falls concludes play at the UWEC Classic tomorrow afternoon against UW-Superior.
