STORM LAKE, Iowa – The UW-River Falls women's basketball team defeated Buena Vista University 79-77 in overtime Saturday afternoon.
UWRF improved to 4-2 overall with its fourth consecutive win and first overtime win of the season.
Four Falcons scored in double figures, led by a 27-point and five-steal effort by
Macy Nilsen, shooting 10-of-22 from the floor.
Cassie Heinrichs added 14,
Colie Justice with 11, and
Katelyn Karch logged 10 points off the bench.
As a team, the Falcons shot 26-of-79 from the field and scored 22 points off 32 BVU turnovers.
After going down 23-11 after the first quarter, the Falcons responded with a 19-point second quarter, outscoring the Beavers by five points to trim the home team's lead to 37-30 at halftime.
UWRF continued to push in the third quarter, trimming the Beaver lead to just three points as a Heinrichs layup set the score at 53-50 heading into the fourth quarter.
Four and a half minutes into the final frame, a triple by Justice gave the Falcons their first lead since early in the contest, a 63-62 UWRF advantage.
The lead changed a couple more times before the Beavers forced overtime, tying the game at 72-72 with a three-pointer at the last second of regulation.
In the overtime period, the Falcons drew five fouls and forced five Beaver turnovers. Free throws by Justice, Heinrichs, and Nilsen made the difference as UWRF came home with the win.
UW-River Falls opens its Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) schedule next week, hosting UW-Stout on Wednesday, Dec. 1.
