A made three-pointer by freshman Colie Justice just seconds after the opening tip was a good omen that the Falcons were heading towards their first win this season, and that's exactly what happened, a 61-54 win over UW-La Crosse.
The first quarter was a tight affair with the Falcons and Eagles going back and forth, and the teams were tied 15-15 after one. It was Justice again who started off the quarter with a three-pointer, this one assisted by Cassie Heinrichs, to give the Falcons a 18-15 lead over the Eagles. From there, the Falcons went on a 14-2 point run to increase the lead and found themselves head by a score of 38-23 at halftime.
Opening the second half, the Falcons began by scoring with a layup made by Taylor Crissinger off a great pass by Jenna Zeman. That led to a 6-3 run by the Falcons, and they were able to end the third quarter leading the Eagles 52-33.
In the fourth, the UW-RF offense stalled a bit and the Eagles were able to get the lead back down to single digits, but the Falcons knocked down nine free throws in the quarter, enough to see out the victory. For the game, the Falcons sank 16 free throws and hit nine three-pointers.
Justice led the Falcons in scoring with 13 points, while Zeman tallied 12 points to go along with 9 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals.
The win was head coach Blake DuDonis' first WIAC win, as well as the first win of this abbreviated season.
The next game for the Falcons will take place on Wednesday, February 17 at undefeated UW-Eau Claire with tip-off slated for 7 pm.
