The UW-River Falls women's basketball team unleashed a shooting display for the record books, but it wasn't enough as they fell at home to UW-Stevens Point 84-76.
Macy Nilsen got things started with a jumper, then she hit a three-pointer after the Falcons press forced a turnover and all things looked good out of the gates. The Falcons pushed the lead to as large as 10, finishing the first quarter up 18-11. Shortly after starting the second quarter, the Pointers stormed ahead and took the lead, but on the back of three Colie Justice three-pointers, the Falcons took a 36-35 lead into halftime.Â
After a rocky start to the third quarter, the Falcons were determined to keep up with the Pointers, going back and forth throughout the quarter. The Pointers extended their lead, ending the third quarter, 56-50. Although the third quarter wasn't the Falcons' sharpest, they saved the offensive fireworks for the final quarter. After the Pointers got up 11, the Falcons were able to cut the lead all the way down to three in just over three minutes of play. Justice hit several more threes, as did Cassie Heinrichs and Jenna Zeman, but UW-Stevens Point went 16-for-16 from the free throw line in the fourth to hold onto the 84-76 win
Justice led the Falcons with 27 points. Of those 27 points, 24 of them were from made three-pointers. The eight made threes is second in both UW-RF and WIAC history. For the team, the 16 made three-pointers is tied for the most threes ever made by a WIAC team, and the 38 attempts are the second most in history.
Zeman led the Falcons in assists with a total of 7, a new career high.
The team will take on the Pointers again, this time on the road, on Friday, February 26 at 7pm.
