Women's Hockey Headed to Finals

After a dominating 5-0 victory in game one of the WIAC Championship semifinals, the UW-River Falls Falcons punched their ticket to the O'Brien Cup Finals with another impressive win over UW-Stevens Point, this one by a score of 6-2.

The game was a little slow to start with both teams flexing their defensive muscles. Ultimately, freshman defenseman Challis Prohaska was able to punch one through at 17:03, giving the Falcons a 1-0 lead heading into the second period with all sirens blazing.

The first goal of the second period came quickly at 2:34 from UWRF's Abigail Stow. Stow was assisted on the goal by Maddie McCollins. As the period progressed, the Pointers were punished for a hooking penalty and at the 14:04 mark, Callie Hoff and Holly Eckers linked together some passes to set up Kora Torkelson for the opportunity to light the lamp and put the Falcons up 3-0. The final goal of the second period came at 19:40 when Brooke Walters scored off a nice assist by Erin Olson.

Going into the third, the Falcons were not satisfied being up 4-0. Playing shorthanded due to a late penalty by Stow, Hoff still managed to capitalized quickly, scoring her 10th goal of the season just 35 seconds into the period. Shortly after, the Pointers were able to score one with the one player advantage on the power play, but any momentum gained did not last long as Alyson Niebur got a breakaway for an unassisted goal at 2:22. The Pointer were able to score one more goal at 15:10 but that would prove to be footnote in a game that was never in doubt.

UW-RF dominated the game, holding a 52-19 edge in shots on goal. The Falcons also led the way iby winning 36 of 52 face-offs.

Freshman Jordan O'Connor played another phenomenal game in net having 18 saves on the night.

After the 6-2 win over the Pointers, the Falcons increase their record to 8-1 on the season. The Falcons next game will be on the road at the travel to UW-Eau Claire for the WIAC Championship. Game one of the three-game series will take place on Monday March 15th.
