Falcons Win in OT; One More Win Away From WIAC Championship

The UW-River Falls Falcons kept their win streak alive, but more importantly, took game one of the WIAC Championship over their rivals at UW-Eau Claire in overtime by a score of 3-2.

The Blugolds got the scoring going pretty quickly when they found the net just 4:46 into the game. Despite the early goal, the Falcons were not going to let game one of the O'Brien Cup run away without a fight. In that vein, Falcons' senior Sam Young found her opportunity to light the lamp at 11:59 in the first to tie things up at 1-1 off a great assist by Brooke Walters.

UW-EC started the second with a player advantage after a late holding penalty on Kiana Gilbraith in the first. Taking advantage of the early power-play, the Blugolds were able to slip one by at 00:53 in the second. Once again, the Falcons were tasked with coming from behind and they continued to answer, this time with Abigail Stow punching through her tenth goal of season at 19:15. Stow was assisted by Callie Hoff and Kayla Schubert to tie the game 2-2.

Period three is where the Falcons truly flexed their defensive muscles by not allowing any goal during the period, but to their credit, the Blugolds did the same.. The Falcons had eight defensive blocks alone while freshman Jordan O'Connor held down the fort having seven saves during the period, sending the game into overtime.

After a break to strategize about what they were going to do, UW-RF wasted absolutely no time at all to clear things up. For the eleventh time this year senior Callie Hoff found the net, after a great interception in the offensive zone, scoring the overtime game winning goal only twenty-one seconds into the extra period.

The Falcons move to 9-1 on the season and are just one win away from being crowned WIAC Champions. They will play the Blugolds again on Wednesday night at 7:05pm for game two of the WIAC Championship, this time at UW-RF.
