Shew Scores Twice During Home Opening Victory

RIVER FALLS, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-River Falls women's soccer team earned its first win of the 2021 season during the home opener Monday afternoon at Ramer Soccer Stadium, led by a pair of goals from Madyson Shew (So., River Falls, Wis.) in a 3-1 victory over the University of Minnesota-Morris.

The visiting Cougars' Kim Peters finished on the first scoring opportunity of the contest just over minutes in, as she broke past the Falcon defense and scored past the left side of UWRF goalkeeper Kaylie Krueger.

UW-River Falls responded with three unanswered goals, tying up the game at 10:50 along with Shew's game-winner and second of the game in the second half.

Alexis Peterson scored her second tally of the year just under 11 minutes into the match for the equalizer, stealing possession from UMM and scoring with a long shot that was out of the reach of the Cougar netminder. UWRF led 17-2 in shots as the score was knotted 1-1 at halftime.

The Falcons continued to pressure the Morris backline while goalkeeper Bernadette Clark and the Cougar defensive held the UWRF offense at bay to open the second half. UWRF broke through, however, at the 69th minute. A great free kick from Kaylee Walter was located inside of the box for Shew to tap in her first career goal as a Falcon.

Shew scored again with five minutes remaining to put UWRF up 3-1, burying a rebound.

UWRF notched 31 shots to UMM's five, and led 10-4 in corner kick opportunities. Krueger earned the win in net, the first of her career while making a pair of saves.
