RIVER FALLS, Wis. – The UW-River Falls women's basketball team opened the 2022 calendar year and closed out its non-conference schedule with a 73-61 win over Concordia College Sunday afternoon at Page Arena.
Junior guard
Macy Nilsen led the way with a career-high 29 total points off 10-of-19 shooting from the field, along with a 4-of-7 mark from three-point range and 5-for-5 output at the free throw line. She also added a team-high six rebounds.
UWRF put together its best shooting percentage since November, going 26-of-58 from the floor while playing strong defense, forcing 16 Cobber turnovers.
After a back-and-forth first frame,
Haley DeSouza opened the second quarter with a three-pointer and the Falcons led throughout the remainder of the first half, leading by as many as 12 after a Nilsen triple that put the home team up 31-19 with 6:12 left in the second.
The Falcons' momentum carried into the second half as the home team shot over 50 percent from the field in the second quarter, regaining a double-digit advantage. A layup from
Cassie Heinrichs put UWRF up 59-44 heading into the final quarter.
Concordia outscored UWRF 17-14 in the final 10 minutes but the Falcons maintained at least a nine-point lead to seal their third consecutive victory while improving to 7-4 overall on the season.
Behind Nilsen,
Jenna Zeman tallied 16 points and a team-high five assists.
UW-River Falls heads back into WIAC competition on Wednesday, Jan. 5, traveling to UW-Stevens Point.
