RIVER FALLS, Wis. – The UW-River Falls women's basketball team knocked off No. 23-ranked UW-Oshkosh Saturday afternoon at Page Arena, defeating the Titans 73-64.
The win snaps a four-game losing skid for the Falcons and earns the team's first WIAC win of the season, improving their overall record to 8-8 and 1-6 in the WIAC standings.
The victory marks the first UWRF triumph over the Titans since Feb. 20, 2016, a 63-56 win in River Falls that clinched a WIAC regular season title.
UWRF shot 25-of-53 from the field, its second-best percentage (.472) of the season while tying a season-high with 12 three-pointers (12-of-24). Defensively, the Falcons limited the top three-point shooting WIAC team in the Titans to a 1-for-20 mark from beyond the arc and forced 16 Oshkosh turnovers.
Three Falcon starters scored in double figures, led by 18 points from
Jenna Zeman, who also blocked three shots and added five assists.
Cassie Heinrichs followed with 16 and 14 from
Colie Justice.
Kameri Meredith led the team with five rebounds.
UWRF opened the game shooting 50 percent from beyond the arc in the first quarter, claiming a 20-12 lead. A Zeman layup to open the second then gave UWRF a 10-point advantage, its largest lead of the first half.
Oshkosh went on a 18-10 run and tied the game at 30-30 with just over a minute remaining, which was answered by a
Katelyn Karch triple, and the Falcons led 35-32 at halftime.
The Titans threatened the Falcons' lead in the third quarter, opening with a pair of baskets to come within one point of UWRF's lead and trimming the Falcon advantage to two points twice.
At the 3:37 mark of the third quarter, three consecutive UWRF field goals capped off by a Meredith fastbreak layup gave the home team a 49-40 lead, forcing a UWO timeout.
Minutes into the fourth quarter, back-to-back triples from Justice and Zeman gave the Falcons a 13-point lead, allowing enough room for the upset victory.
The Falcons next travel to Menomonie, Wis., to face UW-Stout on Wednesday, Jan. 26.
