RIVER FALLS, Wis. - The UW-River Falls women's hockey team came up short in their opening game against Augsburg University Saturday afternoon. The Falcons were defeated 3-4.
The Falcons came out of the gate strong scoring the first goal of the home opener at 1:17.
Kailey Niccum connected with
Emma Schmitz to score her first collegiate goal. The Falcons second goal came on the power play opportunity halfway through the period.
Bailey Olson scored the goal.
Augsburg owned the second period scoring two goals. The first came eight seconds into the Auggie power play.
Madison Lavergne was called for roughing allowing the Auggies to take the advantage. The second goal came at 17:21 in the period. The foal was an unassisted shorthand goal by Nora Stepan.
Twenty-two seconds into the third period Augsburg scored their fourth and final goal of the game, an unassisted goal by Kennedy Stein. The goal gave the Auggies enough of a cushion to defeat the Falcons.
In the final minute of play,
Emma Schmitz scored her first goal of the season to get the Falcons within one.
UWRF outshot Augsburg 25-17.
Jordan O'Connor took the loss for the Falcons giving up four goals.
Sami Miller came in for relief in the final period recording four saves.
Augsburg was 1-for-3 on power play opportunities while UWRF went 1-for-5.
The Falcons travel to St. Mary's University for a nonconference matchup November 4
th. Puck drop is 7 p.m.
