McCollins' hat-trick leads Falcons past SMU

WINONA, Minn. – The No. 7-ranked UW-River Falls women's hockey team defeated Saint Mary's University 5-2 Friday evening for its first win of the season, led by a hat-trick from senior forward Maddie McCollins.

The Falcons scored twice in each of the first two periods and one more in the third, paced by McCollins' first career hat-trick along with three assists from freshman Kaitlyn Ronn.

Aubrey Nelvin and McCollins gave UWRF a two-goal lead before the home team scored late in the first stanza to cut the visitors' lead to 2-1 at the first intermission.

SMU scored again four minutes into the middle frame to tie the game at 2-2, but the Falcons answered with three unanswered to seal the win 5-2.

Alex Hantge scored the Falcons' first power play goal of the season at the seven-minute mark of the second with help from Abigail Stow, and McCollins closed out the night with back-to-back goals late, including an empty netter.

Stow and Megan Goodreau had two assists each.

Sami Miller earned the win in net, making 24 saves.

The Falcons, now 1-1 overall, return to action with their WIAC opener next Friday, Nov. 11, hosting UW-Stevens Point.
