RIVER FALLS, Wis. – The top-ranked UW-River Falls women's hockey team earned a 4-3 victory over No. 7-ranked Augsburg University on Thursday night at Hunt Arena.
The Falcons improved to 3-0 on the season behind goals from four different players and a decisive 42-23 advantage in shots on goal. UWRF controlled play for much of the evening, winning 39 faceoffs and consistently forcing the Auggies to defend in their own zone.
Sophia Hess paced the Falcons with a goal and an assist, while Sami Pool, Katie Ball and Madison Kadrlik also found the back of the net. Hess' second-period tally proved to be the game-winner.
UW-River Falls built a 4-2 lead through two periods behind contributions throughout the lineup. Nine different Falcons recorded at least one point, while 14 players registered a shot on goal.
Pool and Ball scored first-period goals to give the Falcons a 2-1 advantage after 20 minutes. Kadrlik added her first goal of the season in the second period before Hess capitalized on a turnover for what proved to be the decisive goal.
Augsburg pulled within one early in the third period, but UW-River Falls limited quality chances down the stretch to secure the victory. Olivia Hansen made 20 saves to remain unbeaten in net this season.
The Falcons return to action at the College of St. Scholastica on Saturday, Nov. 7, in Duluth, Minn. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m. at Mars Lakeview Arena.
