RIVER FALLS, Wis. – The UW-River Falls women's basketball team opened its 2022-23 season with a 78-48 victory over Buena Vista University at Page Arena.
Freshman
Zoey Buchan stood out during her Falcon debut, scoring a game-high 23 points off 8-of-16 shooting from the field, including a 5-for-8 mark from beyond the arc. It was also the first career win for UWRF interim head coach
Shelby Lyman.
UWRF shot 35 percent from the field and over 30 percent from long range while limiting the Beavers to under 30 percent shooting and 2-for-16 from three-point range.
The Falcons earned a 20-15 lead after the first 10 minutes and didn't look back, holding a lead for the remainder of regulation. Back-to-back baskets from Buchan to open the second frame extended UWRF's lead to double-digits, and the home team led 38-26 at the half.
UWRF outscored BVU 40-22 in the second half, leading by as many as 32 with a
Jaya Hatlestad three-pointer late in the game.
The Falcons led 17-0 in fast break points and scored 23 off Beaver turnovers, forcing 25.
Katelyn Karch and Buchan shared the team-lead with four steals each.
Behind Buchan, Karch added 12 points and 10 from
Kameri Meredith.
Macy Nilsen led the team with nine rebounds.
The Falcons play again tomorrow afternoon at Crown College.
