PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The No. 6-ranked UW-River Falls women's hockey team earned a 3-2 overtime win over No. 1-ranked Middlebury College Sunday afternoon to win the Cardinal/Panther Classic, hosted by Plattsburgh State.
Freshman defender
MaKenna Aure scored with under a minute left in 3-on-3 overtime off a pass from
Emma Schmitz to secure the Championship victory while snapping a 31-game winning streak for the defending national champions from Middlebury.
UWRF, now 8-1 overall, defeated Plattsburgh State yesterday 3-2 for its first of two wins on the weekend during the tournament that featured four of the top-six teams in Division III.
The Falcons outshot the Panthers 16-10 in the first period and took a 1-0 lead off
Ellie Brice's first goal of the season, putting home a rebound off a
Braelyn Sathers shot from the point.
Tied 1-1 heading into the third,
Maddie McCollins scored her team-leading eighth goal of the season from an
Ellie Brice pass to regain the Falcon lead at 7:25 of the third period.
The Panthers tied the game with an extra attacker goal with just 14 seconds left in regulation before Aure's heroics in overtime.
UWRF totaled 43 shots on goal while
Sami Miller collected a season-high 30 saves, improving her record to 7-0.
Ellie Brice (1g-2a),
Maddie McCollins (2g, 1a), and
Sami Miller (54 saves) were named to the All-Tournament Team.
The Falcons face No. 2-ranked Gustavus Adolphus College in a home/home series starting Wednesday, Dec. 7 at Hunt Arena.
