RIVER FALLS, Wis. – The No. 2-ranked UW-River Falls women's hockey team battled top ranked Gustavus Adolphus in their first meeting of the season Wednesday night at Hunt Arena. The Falcons fell 2-0.
In an exciting first period, the Gusties got on the board first taking a 1-0 lead at 10:31. The Falcons outshot the Gusties 12-10 but the Gustie defense would not let a puck through.
Gustavus held their lead through the second period keeping the puck in their offensive zone for the first half of the period. The Falcons applied the pressure in the last few minutes of the period with shots by
Maddie McCollins and
Allisen Carothers.
Gustavus scored an insurance goal in the final 30 seconds of the game extending their lead to 2-0. The goal came on the power play after
MaKenna Aure tripped a Gustie player who was on a breakaway for the open net.
The Falcons had 32 shots on goal and were led by
Abigail Stow who had six and
Aubrey Nelvin who had four.
Sami Miller suffered her first loss of the season while collecting a season high 32 saves in goal.
The Falcons, who are now 8-2 on the season, face off against the top ranked Gustavus Adolphus College again Saturday night in St. Peter.
