EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – The UW-River Falls women's basketball team fell 74-71 at UW-Eau Claire in the WIAC opener Wednesday evening.
The Falcons' three-game winning streak comes to an end, dipping their overall record to 5-2 and 0-1 in the conference.
After a rough first half leading to a deficit as many as 23 late in the second period, UWRF put up a fight in the second half.
The Falcons shot 8-for-19 in the third quarter while limiting the Blugolds to under 30 percent shooting, outscoring the home team 21-11 to cut the UWEC lead to 48-39 heading into the final 10 minutes.
Both teams shot at least 50 percent in the fourth quarter while UWRF totaled 32 points and came within two points of the UWEC lead with a
Zoey Buchan triple with 4:10 left in regulation, down 59-57. UWRF came within two just once more as the home team salvaged the win down the stretch.
Macy Nilsen led the Falcons with 17 points, followed by 16 from
Zoey Buchan.
The Falcons continue conference play at No. 12-ranked UW-Whitewater on Saturday.
