STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-River Falls women's basketball team rallied to defeat UW-Stevens Point 82-79 in double overtime Friday evening.
With the win, UWRF improves to 12-12 overall while the No. 7 seeded Falcons advance to the second round of the WIAC Tournament and will face No. 3 seed UW-Eau Claire on Monday, Feb. 21 in Eau Claire, Wis. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
Down by 17 at halftime and as many as 18 in the second quarter, UWRF battled back in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Pointers 25-13 in the final period to force overtime.
Trailing 54-42 heading into the fourth quarter, the Falcons slowly crawled back into the game, earning its first lead since early on in the game with a
Jenna Zeman triple that gave the Falcons a 64-63 lead with 1:44 left in regulation. UWRF and UWSP then traded baskets before a pair of Pointer free throws forced overtime, tied 67-67.
Each team scored eight points to force double overtime, and during the final period, a
Cassie Heinrichs three-pointer followed by a Zeman jumper gave UWRF a pair of two-point leads with 36 seconds left on the clock. UWSP was forced to foul after a miss, and
Macy Nilsen made one of two at the charity stripe to seal the three-point victory.
Five Falcons scored in double figures while tying a team season-high with 30 field goals made, and the most points scored since Nov. 13. Nilsen led the Falcons with a double-double off 22 points and 11 rebounds.
