RIVER FALLS, Wis. – The UW-River Falls women's basketball team knocked off No. 14/17-ranked UW-Eau Claire Wednesday evening at Page Arena by a score of 80-71.
The Falcons improve to 13-7 overall and 3-6 during WIAC competition while the conference-leading Blugolds dip to 16-4 overall and 7-2 in the WIAC.
UWRF shot just under 50 percent from the field and 9-of-25 from beyond the arc to earn its first win over UW-Eau Claire since 2019, snapping an eight-game losing skid against the Blugolds. UWRF was solid defensively, holding the WIAC's leading scorer Jessie Ruden to a 1-of-9 mark from beyond the arc .
Four Falcons scored in double figures, led by
Macy Nilsen's 19 points along with
Olivia Miron's career-high 15 points off 7-of-8 shooting.
Julia Seidel and
Averie Varsho each added 10, while
Kameri Meredith tallied a team-high nine rebounds.
The home team opened the night shooting over 60 percent in the first period, and led for the entirety of the second quarter. A
Zoey Buchan fastbreak layup with seconds left in the first half gave UWRF a 39-36 halftime advantage.
After some early lead changes to open the second half, UWRF made five-straight baskets to close out the third quarter leading 58-48. The Falcons led by as many as 16 in the fourth after back-to-back Meredith layups, and UWRF led by at least eight for the rest of regulation.
UWRF has a bye this Saturday before returning to action at UW-Stout next Wednesday, Feb. 1.
