ST. CLOUD, Minn. – The UW-River Falls men's hockey team earned a 2-0 win at Saint John's University during its 2023-24 season opener.
SJU held a slim 33-31 lead in shots on goal, but
Dysen Skinner and the Falcon defense held the Johnnies scoreless while scoring a goal each in the second and third periods.
After a scoreless first two periods, the Falcons opened the scoring during their first power play opportunity of the game, with
Jonny Meiers capitalizing for his first goal as a Falcon in his first collegiate game.
Dylan Smith and
Connor McGrath were credited with assists.
Early in the third period,
Noah Roofe gave UWRF a two-goal lead, putting home a feed on the doorstep from
Arsenii Smekhnov.
UWRF also killed off four Johnnie power plays.
Dylan Smith led the Falcons with five shots on goal, trailed by four from
Gibb Coady.
Skinner made 33 saves to collect his seventh career shutout.
UWRF (1-0, 0-0 WIAC) hosts the University of Dubuque on Tuesday for its home opener at Hunt Arena.
