No. 3 Falcons hang on to defeat No. 8 Adrian, 7-5

RIVER FALLS, Wis. - The No. 3-ranked UW-River Falls women's hockey team defeated No. 8-ranked Adrian College 7-5 Thursday evening at Hunt Arena.

The Falcons, now 9-0 overall, led 6-2 heading into the third period before the Bulldogs fought back with three third period goals to cut the UWRF lead to 6-5, but a Falcon empty-net goal late in regulation sealed the win.

UWRF scored three power play goals, going 3-for-3 on the night, and had six different goal scorers, led by Kaitlyn Ronn's two goals, her first and second of the season.

Brooke Lemke opened the game's scoring just over three minutes in, which was answered later in the period by the Bulldogs to tie the game. UWRF scored two more to earn a 3-1 lead after one period. In the middle frame, UWRF scored three more, including power play goals from Aubrey Nelvin and MaKenna Aure, along with Ronn's second of the game.

Just three and a half minutes into the third period, Adrian had scored twice to trim the Falcon lead to 6-4, and pushed for another at 14:10 with Une Bjelland's second goal of the period. The Bulldogs pulled their goaltender with just over a minute left in regulation, but an empty net goal from Maddie McCollins re-extended the Falcon lead to two goals.

McCollins assisted on five of UWRF's seven goals, a career-high total. Alex Hantge also had two assists.

Jordan O'Connor made 17 saves to earn the win, improving her record to 8-0 on the year.

UWRF remains at home next Tuesday, hosting another top-10 opponent, facing off against the reigning national champions from Gustavus Adolphus College.
