RIVER FALLS, Wis. - The No. 2-ranked UW-River Falls women's hockey team took down the top-ranked and defending national champions from Gustavus Adolphus College Tuesday night at Hunt Arena by a score of 2-0.
UWRF remains unbeaten with a 10-0 overall record, opening its season series against the Gusties in shutout fashion.Â
After a scoreless first period,
Alex Hantge scored the eventual game-winner at 10:55 of the second period, receiving a pass from
Aubrey Nelvin and scoring on the rush just seconds after a successful Falcon penalty kill.
Gustavus out-shot the Falcons 14-9 in the final 20 minutes in an attempt to tie the game. UWRF turned away all three Gustie power play chances on the night, and scored an empty net goal by
Aubrey Nelvin late after the visitors pulled their goalie.Â
The duo of
Alex Hantge and
Aubrey Nelvin led the Falcons with two points each off a goal and assist.
Jordan O'Connor stood tall in net for the Falcons, collecting her third shutout of the season with a career-high 29 saves.Â
The Falcons return to action at the College of St. Scholastica on Saturday.
