STEVENS POINT, Wis. — The UW-River Falls men's soccer team stayed in strong form this Saturday, defeating UW-Stevens Point 2-0 on the road.
A big second half led UWRF to victory, as the Falcons put up 13 of their 18 shots in the final 45 minutes of play. The victory stretched UW-River Falls' winning streak to four straight games, and improved the team's record on the year to 6-6 overall and 2-0 in WIAC play.
The first half saw an even balance of shots, as UW-River Falls held a slight advantage through 45 minutes of action. The Falcons held a 5-3 lead in total shots. UW-Stevens Point totaled three corner kicks compared to just one for UW-River Falls, but neither team managed to score in the first half as the Falcons and Pointers went into halftime tied at 0-0.
The second half made all the difference for UWRF, as the Falcons capitalized with two goals to swing the balance of the match. In the 57th minute, freshman Ashton Musgrave sent in a cross from the right side that connected right on the dot to junior Kellen Richardson, who leaped in the air and slammed the ball into the back of the net with his left foot. The goal is the first for Kellen Richardson as a Falcon.
UWRF played well in the second half and limited UW-Stevens Point from finding an equalizer. In the 90th minute, sophomore Sorel Richardson smoothly dribbled around the Pointers' back line and goalkeeper to score a goal that put the game away at 2-0. The goal was assisted by Logan Meyer, who found Sorel Richardson on a nifty through ball that beat the UW-Stevens Point back line.
A physical game, UWRF and UW-Stevens Point combined for 41 total fouls, nine yellow cards, and two red cards.
Ben Harris led UWRF with six total shots and three shots on target, while Sorel Richardson and Kellen Richardson each tallied three shots. Freshman goalkeeper Alvaro Boned finished with three saves, and the shutout is the second of his career.
Up next, UWRF continues its stretch of road games playing its third out of four consecutive away matches. The Falcons will head to UW-Platteville to face the Pioneers at 7 p.m. on Oct. 18.
