RIVER FALLS, Wis. — The UW-River Falls men's soccer team clinched its spot in the WIAC Tournament semifinals by defeating UW-Stout 3-0 at Ramer Field on Wednesday, Nov. 6.
Sophomore Sorel Richardson led the way for the Falcons with two goals, as the team held a 31-13 advantage in total shots. The win punched UWRF's ticket to the conference tournament semifinals, where the No. 3 seed Falcons will play No. 2 seed UW-Platteville on the road on Nov. 8.
The Falcons controlled the offensive tempo and a majority of possession in the first half, despite a scoreless match through the first 25 minutes — UWRF held a 9-2 advantage in shots in that stretch. In the 26th minute, the Falcons broke through for the first goal of the match, as Sorel Richardson scored from the top of the box off assists from Gabriel Abad Lobo and Landon Christiansen. The goal is the fourth of the season for Richardson.
UWRF doubled its lead to 2-0 in the 35th minute, as Richardson scored his second of the day. This time around, Abad Lobo and Victor Vancauteren assisted. The Falcons went into halftime leading by two goals and holding a 21-2 advantage in shots.
UW-Stout upped its shots in the second half, but UW-River Falls prevented any possible equalizer and kept the Blue Devils scoreless in the final 45 minutes. The Falcons added 10 second-half shots and goalkeeper Alvaro Boned recorded three saves against a total of 11 shots faced.
The Falcons added their third goal of the match in the 83rd minute, as Danny Davila scored his first goal of the year on a shot assisted by Carson Galla. The goal extended the differential to three and put any doubt away as UWRF advanced out of the first round of the tournament.
Richardson and Ashton Musgrave led the way with three shots each, while Ben Harris and Colin Leech each had four.
Up next, UWRF will travel to face No. 2 seed UW-Platteville in the WIAC Tournament semifinals on Nov. 8. The match is set to kick off at 7 p.m.
