DULUTH, Minn. — The top-ranked UW-River Falls women's hockey team defeated St. Scholastica 5-2 on Saturday afternoon.
The victory stretched UWRF's unbeaten streak to 34 games straight as the Falcons improved to 2-0-1 on the season.
After a pair of early Falcon goals, St. Scholastica scored twice in the second period to tie the game at 2-2. UWRF responded though with three unanswered goals to secure the win.
Elile Brice and
Megan Goodreau took turns scoring and assisting on goals in the first to put UWRF up 2-0 through 20 minutes. Brice scored the first goal of the game at the 3:22 mark assisted by Goodreau, and Goodreau doubled the lead to 2-0 off an assist from Brice at 7:45 in the first.
Eight minutes into the middle frame, CSS tied the game at 2-2. Late in the period though, the Falcons scored on the power play as
Kailey Niccum assisted on a
Katherine Bell goal to grant the Falcons a 3-2 lead heading into the third period.
UWRF led in shots on goal 40-9 through 40 minutes, and despite a strong CSS effort in the third period as the home team tallied 14 shots compared to UWRF's 15, the Falcons scored twice to put the Saints away.
Alexa Niccum scored her first as a Falcon before Goodreau's second of the game.
Megan Goodreau (2g-1a) and
Ellie Brice (1g-2a) each had three-point games. Goodreau also led the Falcons with 11 shots on target.
Jordan O'Kane made 12 saves to improve her record to 2-0-1 on the year.
