RIVER FALLS, Wis. - The No. 1-ranked UW-River Falls women's hockey team defeated No. 6-ranked UW-Eau Claire 4-3 in overtime Wednesday night at Hunt Arena during National Girls and Women in Sports Day.
With the win, the Falcons' program and WIAC record win streak improved to 24 games while secure the conference regular season crown and the top seed for the WIAC Tournament/O'Brien Cup. It marks the fourth straight regular season title for the Falcons and 10th in the last 11 years.
Tied 3-3 headed into overtime,
Megan Goodreau cleaned up a rebound for the game-winner, her second goal of the game and third point on the night. Both teams scored once on the power play while UWRF held a 37-16 advantage in shots on goal.
The Falcons and Blugolds traded goals in the first period, with UWEC scoring on its first power play attempt of the game nine minutes in. Soon after,
Madison Kadrlik tied the game heading into the middle frame.
Alex Hantge scored on the power play to claim UWRF's first lead of the game, which was answered late in the period by the Blugolds to tie the game again. Just a minute later though, Goodreau scored her first of two goals on the night to give the home team a 3-2 lead heading into the third period.
UWEC goaltender Alexa Backmann turned away all 15 Falcon shots on goal in the third period, and a Sadie Long goal tied the game at 3-3 to force overtime.
Jordan O'Connor made 13 saves to remain undefeated in net with a 16-0 record.Â
UWRF (24-0, 11-0 WIAC) closes out the regular season next Saturday, Feb. 17 at UW-Eau Claire.
