Falcons vs. Soaring Eagles, NCAA DIII Women's Hockey Championship Preview

UWRF women's hockey hosts Elmira College on Sunday, March 17 at Hunt Arena in the NCAA Division III Women's Ice Hockey National Championship game.

TICKETS
  • Tickets will be $15 for adults and $10 for students/seniors. Youth ages 2 and under are free.
  • There are NO INDIVIDUAL ADVANCED TICKETS available for sale.
  • Tickets will be sold at the door 1.5 hours prior to the start of the game.
  • Tickets are FREE for UWRF students thanks to the UWRF Student Government Association.
THE SERIES
  • Sunday's game will mark the fifth all-time meeting between UW-River Falls and Elmira College, with the Soaring Eagles owning a 3-1 series lead.
    • All four matchups between the Falcons and Soaring Eagles have came during the NCAA Tournament.
    • Most recently, UWRF defeated Elmira 4-3 in the 2016 NCAA Semifinals to advance to the National Championship for the first time in program history. UWRF then fell 5-1 to Plattsburgh State, earning a runner-up finish.
NCAA TOURNAMENT HISTORY
  • UWRF is coming off a 3-2 win over Adrian College on Friday on its home ice, with over 1,400 fans at Hunt Arena. The Falcons rallied from a one-goal deficit heading into the third period, scoring twice to earn its second trip to the NCAA Division III National Championship game in program history. UWRF improved to 30-0 overall to break an NCAA DIII Women's Ice Hockey record for most wins in a single season.
    • The Falcons are making their 15th NCAA Tournament appearance in program history, earning an at-large bid after winning both the 2023-24 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) regular season and tournament titles. UWRF has reached the 'Frozen Four' six times (2003, 2009, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2024), including a pair of third-place finishes and a national runner-up finish in 2016.
    • Last year in the NCAA Tournament, the Falcons fell 2-1 in the quarterfinals against the eventual national champions, Gustavus Adolphus College.
UWRF HEADLINES AHCA NATIONAL HONORS
  • The American Hockey Coaches Association released its 2023-24 CCM/AHCA Division III national awards on Thursday, with UWRF leading the way with five Falcons earning All-America status; MaKenna Aure, Megan Goodreau, Alex Hantge, Maddie McCollins, and Jordan O'Connor.
  • Aure and McCollins were named to the West First Team, while Goodreau, Hantge, and O'Connor were selected to the West Second Team.
  • Maddie McCollins was also awarded the Laura Hurd Player of the Year while head coach Joe Cranston was selected as the Coach of the Year.
    • McCollins was the third Falcon in UWRF history to receive National Player of Year honors, following Callie Hoff (2022) and Dani Sibley (2017).
    • A nine-time Conference Coach of the Year and three-time National Coach of the Year runner-up, this year's Coach of the Year award was Cranston's first of his career.
