RIVER FALLS, Wis. — The UW-River Falls men's soccer team was defeated by UW-Stevens Point, 2-0, at Ramer Soccer Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 28.
The Pointers capitalized off two second-half goals, holding a narrow 16-14 advantage in shots over the Falcons. The game saw 29 total fouls and six yellow cards.
In the first half, both teams saw quality looks at the goal, and played out an even 0-0 draw after 45 minutes. Both UWRF and UW-Stevens Point totaled seven first-half shots.
UW-Stevens Point broke the scoreless draw in the 67th minute, as Cameron Johcimsen stole the ball away from UWRF's back line and found the back of the net on an unassisted goal.
The Falcons totaled seven more shots in the second half, but were unable to score a goal. With just over 15 minutes remaining in the match, Jochimsen scored again for UW-Stevens Point, this time off a high-arching header. The goal was assisted by Jack Hudson and Marcelo Chavez. The Falcons created several attacking chances late in the game, but ultimately fell 2-0.
Freshman Ben Harris led the way for UWRF with four shots and two shots on goal. Mauricio Cuevas and Noah Meschke each finished with two shots and one shot on goal. Freshman goalkeeper Alvaro Boned recorded seven saves in the match, one of which came on a penalty kick situation in the first half that kept the score level at 0-0.
Up next, the Falcons play at home and on the road next week. UWRF will travel to Appleton, Wis. on Oct. 1 to face Lawrence at 5 p.m., before hosting UW-Whitewater at 4 p.m. on Oct. 4.
