ST. PETER, Minn. — The UW-River Falls women's soccer team lost its matchup at Gustavus Adolphus, 1-0, on Sunday, Sept. 29.

A penalty kick off a handball in the penalty box was the deciding factor in the game, as the Falcons fell to 5-3-1 on the season. UWRF held an 8-6 advantage in shots on goal and saw a 16-16 tie in total shots, but ultimately were unable to find the back of the net in the loss.

In the first half, the shots on goal for both teams were even at three each. Gustavus held a 9-7 advantage in total shots. Despite chances at goal by both teams, UWRF went into halftime with a 0-0 tie.

The Falcons saw a similar volume of shots in the second half, as the half finished 9-7 in total shots, in favor of UWRF. 

In the 74th minute of the match, UWRF was called for a handball in the 18-yard box that allowed the Gusties to attempt a penalty kick. Junior forward Haillee Wilson successfully converted the penalty kick into the left side of the net. 

The Falcons created several late attempts toward an equalizing goal, pushing the ball into Gustavus territory late in the game. With under 10 seconds remaining, Lauren Gregory fired a shot from the box that was saved, ultimately ending the game at a 1-0 victory for the Gusties.

Ellie Ketcher led the Falcons with three shots and two shots on target, while Lexi Atkinson totaled three shots and one shot on goal. In goal, Grace Zellmer recorded five saves for UWRF.

Up next, the Falcons are set to host UW-Stout at Ramer Soccer Stadium on Wednesday, Oct. 2. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
