Falcons come up short in Stevens Point, 58-53

STEVENS POINT, Wis. — The No. UW-River Falls women's basketball team dropped a WIAC road game Wednesday night, falling 58-53 at UW-Stevens Point.

A second quarter in which UWRF was limited to just five points made the difference as the Falcons turned in a strong second half but couldn't break the Pointer lead, sinking UWRF's overall record to 9-5 overall and 1-3 during conference play.

UWRF competed with the Pointers in the first quarter, trailing 16-14 through the first 10 minutes despite the home team shooting over 60 percent from the field. However, UWSP held the Falcons to just a pair of field goals in the second frame to take a 28-19 lead at halftime. Rebounding made a difference in the first half with the Pointers leading 20-7 on the glass.

The Falcons opened the second half on a 9-2 run to trim the Pointer lead to 30-28, and later in the quarter, a Karleigh Creasey triple tied the game at 37-37. The Pointers closed out the period outscoring the Falcons 10-5, but UWRF saw a manageable deficit, down 47-42 heading into the fourth quarter.

In the final 10 minutes, the Falcons held the home team to 30 percent shooting but struggled at the free throw line, going 3-for-7 at the charity stripe. UWRF outscored UWSP 14-13, coming within three points of the lead early in the quarter with an Olivia Hoerl layup, but the Pointers maintained at least a four-point edge for the rest of regulation.

Hoerl led the Falcons with 18 points, shooting 7-of-14 from the field. Zoey Buchan and Creasey followed with 11 points each. Olivia Miron had a team-high seven rebounds while Mari Ryberg had four assists.

UWRF travels to face UW-Platteville on Satrurday with a 3 p.m. tipoff.
