WINONA, Minn. — The UW-River Falls men's hockey team earned a 4-3 win in overtime Saturday night at Saint Mary's University.
The Falcons, now 10-7 overall, erased a 3-2 deficit late in regulation as
Alex Atwill scored an extra attacker goal to force overtime, followed
Dylan Smith scoring 1:42 into overtime to seal the win.
UWRF finished with a 35-27 edge over the Cardinals in the shot column and led 33-27 in faceoffs. Smith and
Burke Simpson both had two assists while
Brennan Boynton made 24 saves in net.
Jonny Meiers scored on the rush with just eight seconds left in the first period to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead, in which they carried through most of the second period until SMU got on the board late in the middle frame with a power play tally to knot the score at 1-1 heading into the third period.
A
Cole Teleki slapshot from the point regained the lead for UWRF early the third period, but the Cardinals responded with a pair of goals to put the Falcons down 3-2 with eight and a half minutes left in regulation. With under three minutes to play, the Falcons pulled Boynton for the extra attacker and capitalized, as Atwill tied the game, jumping on a loose puck in front.
Just under two minutes into overtime, Smith scored his team-leading ninth goal of the season, deflecting an
Ethan Lindahl shot past Cardinal goaltender A.J. Ruskowski for the win, UWRF's second overtime win this season.
The Falcons head back into WIAC play next weekend with a road series at UW-Superior.
