RIVER FALLS, Wis. — The No. 14-ranked UW-River Falls men's hockey team fell 3-2 in overtime Friday night at Hunt Arena against Augsburg University during the opening game of the 2025 calendar year.
Despite claiming a 2-0 lead through two periods, the Falcons conceded a pair of Auggie goals in the third period and Conner Schneider scored with 27 seconds left in the extra period to earn the win for the visitors.
UWRF opened the scoring at 9:58 of the first period as
Connor Brust joined the rush, receiving a pass from
Alex Atwill and scoring his second of the season to give the Falcons a one-goal lead through one period.
The Falcons added another in the middle frame with a
Jonny Meiers goal that snuck past Augsburg goaltender Carsen Stokes' five-hole, and the home team took a 2-0 lead into the final 20 minutes.
Shots on goal were deadlocked at 10-10 in the third period, and Augsburg broke the shutout just over two minutes into the period, and then tied the game seven minutes later.
Both teams went scoreless on the power play and the Falcons held a 38-30 advantage in shots on goal.
Dylan Smith and Brust shared the team lead with five shots each, while Brust led the Falcons with five blocked shots.
Brennan Boynton made 27 saves while suffering the loss.
Tomorrow night, the Falcons head back into WIAC play at UW-Stout.
