SAINT PETER, Minn. — For the second night in a row, UW-River Falls men's hockey won in overtime, defeating Gustavus Adolphus College 3-2 on Saturday at Don Roberts Ice Rink.
The Falcons, now 3-1 overall, won their second of the weekend after a 4-3 overtime win last night at Hamline University.
Last night at Hamline, freshman forward
Ben Portner scored the overtime game-winner. Tonight, he played a role, assisting on the game-winning goal to fellow freshman and linemate
Gavin Middendorf, scoring just under two minutes into the extra frame to seal the win.
Portner opened the game's scoring 9:22 into regulation, as
Keenan Ingram pounced on a Gustie turnover and fed Portner for his fourth goal of the season. UWRF carried a 1-0 lead into the third period before the home team scored a pair seven minutes into final frame to take a 2-1 lead.
Another Falcon freshman came up clutch later in the third as Ingram tied the game at 2-2 just past the midway point of the period, forcing overtime that led to Middendorf's heroics.
Brennan Boynton made the start in net and made a season-high 35 saves to improve his record to 3-1.
Both teams went 0-for-2 on the power play while Gustavus held a 37-24 lead in shots on goal.
Up next, the Falcons return to Hunt Arena to face non-conference opponents Saint John's and Concordia College.
