SUPERIOR, Wis. — The UW-River Falls men's hockey team defeated UW-Superior 4-3 Friday evening, powered by a trio of power play goals.
The Falcons, now 5-4 overall and 1-2 in the WIAC, went 3-for-6 on the power play and received goals from
Luke Margenau,
Keenan Ingram,
Jonny Meiers, and
Gavin Middendorf, while goaltender
Brennan Boynton backstopped the win with 27 saves.
Superior opened the scoring at 10:35 of the first period when Daniel Rozsival converted on the power play for a 1-0 lead. The Falcons answered on their first man advantage of the night, as a Margenau shot from the point found its way through for his first goal as a Falcon, tying the game at 1-1 heading into the first intermission.
UWRF seized momentum early in the second. Ingram pushed the Falcons ahead with his team-leading ninth of the season, one-timing a power-play goal off crisp puck movement from Margenau and Alex Atwill. Just over seven minutes later, Meiers extended the lead to 3-1 with the team's third power-play marker, finishing a setup from Cole Teleki and Max Collette.
Superior trimmed the deficit to 3-2 late in the second.
Protecting a one-goal lead in the third, the Falcons turned away a strong push back from the Yellowjackets, and scored an empty net goal by Middendorf with under two minutes remaining. But seconds later, UWS didn't quit and trimmed the UWRF lead to 4-3, but the Falcons held on for the win.
UWRF finished with a 30-27 edge in shots on goal and won 28 faceoffs, led by Collette's 11-for-20 performance on the dot
The Falcons return to Hunt Arena tomorrow night to host UW-Eau Claire. Puck drop is set for 7:05 p.m.
