Women's Basketball defeated by nationally ranked Warhawks

RIVER FALLS, Wis. — The UW-River Falls women's basketball team dropped a WIAC contest against No. 24-ranked UW-Whitewater Saturday afternoon, falling by a score of 66-46.

The Falcons, now 13-10 overall and 5-7 in the WIAC, were limited to 32.7 percent shooting from the field while the Warhawks shot at least 40 percent from the field and from beyond the arc, led by 22 points from Kacie Carollo - the WIAC's leading scorer. Zoey Buchan matched her game-high point total with 22 points of her own, shooting 9-of-18 from the field with a trio of three-pointers.

UWRF hung with UWW early on, with the home team taking a 9-8 lead with a Buchan triple seven and a half minutes into regulation. The Warhawks closed out the quarter holding the Falcons scoreless to lead 12-9 after 10 minutes and they led for the remainder of the game.

In the second quarter, the Falcons twice came within two points of the Warhawks after an Olivia Hoerl layup trimmed the deficit to 16-14 and a pair of free throws from Jaya Hatlestad cut the score to 18-16. UWW then went on a 10-3 run to lead by nine at halftime at 28-19, carrying its momentum into the second half.

The visitors put the game out of the Falcons' reach in the second half, shooting 50 percent from the field and leading by as many as 24 early in the fourth quarter.

Aside from Buchan's 22 points, Hoerl followed with 11 points and a team-high eight rebounds.

Up next, the Falcons head to UW-La Crosse on Wednesday, Feb. 19 for their final regular season road game.
