No. 1 Falcons host UW-Superior in WIAC Tournament Semifinals

The UW-River Falls women's hockey team opens postseason play this weekend as the top-seeded and No. 1 nationally ranked Falcons host No. 4 seed UW-Superior this weekend at Hunt Arena in the WIAC O'Brien Cup Tournament Semifinals.

2025 WIAC TOURNAMENT

  • UWRF finished undefeated in the WIAC regular season standings for the second year in a row and third time in program history, clinching the regular season crown and No. 1 seed for the O'Brien Cup for the fifth consecutive season.
  • Since the inception of the WIAC O'Brien Cup Tournament in 2014, the Falcons hold a 29-3-2 playoff record with nine O'Brien Cup titles and five in a row. 

AGAINST THE YELLOWJACKETS

  • This weekend's games will mark the 94-95th all-time meetings between UW-River Falls and UW-Superior, with the Falcons leading the series 61-27-5.
  • UWRF swept the regular 2024-25 regular season series against UWS, prevailing 8-2, 5-2, and 7-2.
  • In WIAC Tournament history, the Falcons and Yellowjackets have faced each other eight times, with UWRF leading the series 7-0-1.
  • UWRF and UWS last faced each other during the 2022 WIAC O'Brien Cup semifinals, with the Falcons prevailing with duplicate 6-0 wins.

FALCON NOTES

  • The Falcons earned the No. 1 ranking in the national polls by USCHO and DIII Hockey News for the second week in a row.
  • UWRF closed out the regular season last Saturday at Hunt Arena, defeating No. 12-ranked UW-Eau Claire 9-0.
    • The Falcons scored nine goals for the third game in a row and second time against UW-Eau Claire, sweeping the Blugolds with a trio of wins in the season series, including a pair of shutouts.
    • UWRF scored a pair of power play goals and was paced by multi-goal efforts from Bailey Olson, Megan Goodreau, and Alexa Niccum - who also had two assists for a total of four points, and was named the WIAC Player of the Week. It marked the sixth week in a row in which UWRF was represented with the WIAC weekly award.
  • The Falcons are the top scoring team in NCAA Division III, averaging 6.2 goals per game. The +4.3 scoring margin and 0.311 power-play percentage both rank second.
  • Individually, senior forward Bailey Olson is the DIII leading scorer with 48 points off 23 goals and 25 assists. Megan Goodreau ranks fifth with 42 points (19g-23a).
