SUPERIOR, Wis. — The No. 4 seeded UW-River Falls men's hockey team fell 4-1 at top-seeded and No. 9-ranked UW-Superior Friday night in the opening game of the WIAC Tournament Semifinals.
Ian Carpenter scored UWRF's lone goal before the home team rattled off four unanswered goals to earn the win. The Falcons found themselves in penalty trouble for the majority of the game, committing nine infractions while UWS went 1-for-7 on the power play.
After a scoreless first period in which the Falcons killed off a trio of Yellowjacket power plays, Carpenter scored her first as a Falcon five minutes into the second period. He scored off the rush, skating down the right wing off an outlet pass from
Owen Belisle as his wrist shot snuck five-hole past Yellowjacket goaltender Jan Skorpik. Just a few minutes later however, the Yellowjackets were afforded their fifth power pay chance of the night and converted to tie the game at 1-1.
Late in the second, Reed Stark scored the eventual game-winner as the home team shutout UWRF for the rest of regulation, adding a couple more in the third period despite being outshot by the Falcons 12-7 in the final 20 minutes.
Brennan Boynton made 34 saves in the loss, his second most this season.
The Falcons and Yellowjackets play again tomorrow night with a 7:05 p.m. puck drop from Wessman Arena in Superior, Wis.
