RIVER FALLS, Wis. — The UW-River Falls men's hockey team fell by a score of 7-5 Saturday evening at Hunt Arena.
The Falcons, who won last night 3-2 in overtime over the Blugolds, saw UW-Eau Claire salvage a weekend split as they bounced back with a high-scoring victory.
After a relatively quiet first period with one goal apiece, including a goal from
Alex Atwill, a busy second period featured eight goals and 27 penalty minutes. UWEC quickly scored to open the period and gained a 3-1 lead eight minutes in, but the Falcons bounced back with goals from
Jonny Meiers and
Burke Simpson under two minutes apart to tie the game at 3-3. Eau Claire scored three more though compared to one for UWRF, Simpson's second goal of the night.
At the end of the second period, several penalties were assessed including a major and game misconduct to UWRF's
Brennan Boynton.
Nolan LaCosse went in net in relief to open the third period and the Blugolds capitalized with their second power play goal of the game to increase their lead to 7-4, putting the game out of the Falcons' reach.
Late in regulation,
Ethan Lindahl scored an extra attacker power play goal to trim the Blugold lead to 7-5, but it was too little too late.
Behind Simpson's three points off two goals and an assist,
Reid Lune led the Falcons with three assists. Boynton made 16 saves in net along with eight from LaCosse.
UWRF (12-10-1, 6-6-1 WIAC) closes out the regular season next weekend with a WIAC series at home against Northland College.
