Women’s Basketball defeated at UW-Oshkosh

OSHKOSH, Wis. — The UW-River Falls Women's Basketball team lost its most recent matchup, falling on the road against #5/#7 UW-Oshkosh, 70-34, in Oshkosh, Wis. on Saturday, February 8.

The loss dropped UWRF's record on the season to 12-9 overall and 4-6 in WIAC play. UWRF and UWO have now split the regular season series between the two schools, with the Falcons defeating the Titans at Page Arena on Jan. 25.

Both teams struggled shooting in the first quarter, going under 30%, but UW-Oshkosh built a 14-6 lead behind two three-pointers and a 4-6 clip at the free-throw line. The Falcons out-rebounded the Titans 15-6 in the first frame, but struggled to score early.

The Titans extended their lead to 23-9 early in the second quarter, before a spree of shots from Olivia Hoerl allowed UWRF to stay within striking distance — she scored eight points in a row for the Falcons on consecutive possessions, helping UW-River Falls draw within 25-19 with 2:22 remaining in the first half — this scoreline would stand through the conclusion of the first half.. UWRF ended the half on a 10-5 run, as Hoerl totaled 11 first-half points.

The third quarter made a large impact on the outcome of the game, as UW-Oshkosh opened the second half on an 11-2 run that turned into a 22-10 advantage in the quarter for the Titans, who shot 52.9% from the field during the frame. The Falcons went into the final quarter trailing 47-29.

A 13-0 run by UW-Oshkosh to open the fourth quarter put the game out of reach, as the Falcons ultimately fell 70-34 after being outscored 45-15 in the second half.

Hoerl led UWRF with 15 points and seven rebounds, hitting three shots from beyond the arc. Four Titans scored in double figures.

Up next, UWRF will return to Page Arena for the first of back-to-back home games in River Falls. The Falcons will host UW-Stout at 7 p.m. on Feb. 12.
