WINTER HAVEN, Fla. — The UW-River Falls baseball team defeated Trinity College 7-0 Tuesday morning in its fifth of six games during its spring break trip at the RussMatt Invitational.
The Falcons, now 3-2 overall, built earn early lead with six runs in the first three innings while the pitching staff of
Kaleb Zabielski,
Dillon Carrell,
Brayden Ramus, and
Isaac Mens combined for the shutout.
Key contributors for the Falcons included
John Santelman, who drove in two runs along with two hits and two runs scored, and a multi-hit game from
Andrew Athmann. Trinity struggled to generate offense, managing just four hits and leaving several runners stranded.
UWRF scored two runs in each of the first three innings, scoring an unearned run along with an Athmann RBI single in the first.
Max Krebs followed up with an RBI single in the second, and came around to score on a double steal to extend UWRF's lead to 4-0.
In the third, Santelman hit a ground-rule double to score
Hudson Wagner and
Kale Twombly, increasing the Falcons' lead to 6-0. For extra insurance, a
JV Castillo sacrifice fly in the sixth pushed UWRF's lead to 7-0.
Zabielski made his second start of the season on the mound, pitching five innings with five strikeouts while allowing just one Trinity base hit, improving his record to 2-0. Carrell, Ramus, and Mens each pitched one inning in relief, combining for seven strikeouts and one hit allowed each.
Tomorrow, the Falcons wrap up their spring trip facing Springfield College at 9:15 a.m. (ET) at NorthEast Regional Park in Davenport, Fla.
