Falcons to host Blugolds in WIAC O'Brien Cup Championship

The No. 1 seeded UW-River Falls women's hockey team is set to host No. 2 seed UW-Eau Claire on Saturday, March 8 in the WIAC O'Brien Cup Tournament Championship.

2025 WIAC TOURNAMENT

  • UWRF finished undefeated in the WIAC regular season standings for the second year in a row and third time in program history, clinching the regular season crown and No. 1 seed for the O'Brien Cup for the fifth consecutive season.
  • Since the inception of the WIAC O'Brien Cup Tournament in 2014, the Falcons hold a 31-3-2 playoff record with nine O'Brien Cup titles and five in a row. 
    • Last weekend, the Falcons swept UW-Superior in the semifinals at Hunt Arena, outscoring UWS 14-1 with seven power play goals.

AGAINST THE BLUGOLDS

  • Saturday's game marks the 94th all-time meeting the UW-River Falls and UW-Eau Claire, with UWRF maintaining a 65-17-11 series advantage.
  • UWRF swept the regular 2024-25 regular season series against UWEC, winning 5-0, 9-2, and 9-0.
    • In WIAC Tournament history, the Falcons and Blugolds have faced off 16 times, with UWRF leading the series 11-3-1.

FALCON NOTES

  • The Falcons earned the No. 1 ranking in the national polls by USCHO and DIII Hockey News for the third week in a row.
  • UWRF is coming off a WIAC Tournament Semifinal series sweep over UW-Superior Feb. 28-March 1 at Hunt Arena, defeating the Yellowjackets by scores of 8-1 and 6-0, including an over 40% success rate on the power play with seven goals. 
    • The Falcons scored five power play goals during game one on Friday, setting a new program single-game record. The previous record was four, set multiple times.
    • Bailey Olson led the Falcons with six points, while Madison Kadrlik had three goals - scoring her fourth hat-trick of the season in the series opener.
    • Jordan O'Kane started both games in net and totaled 38 saves with a .974 save percentage, recording her third shutout of the season during game two.
  • The Falcons are the top scoring team in NCAA Division III, averaging 6.3 goals per game. The +4.4 scoring margin and .330 power-play percentage both rank second.
  • Individually, senior forward Bailey Olson is the DIII leading scorer with 54 points off 25 goals and 29 assists. 
  • Goaltender Jordan O'Kane has made five consecutive starts in net, accumulating a .934 save percentage and a 1.13 goals against average, including a shutout over nationally ranked UW-Eau Claire on Feb. 22.
