MENOMONIE, Wis. — The UW-River Falls baseball team fell in both games of a WIAC doubleheader at UW-Stout Wednesday afternoon.
The Falcons, now 12-20 overall and 5-15 during WIAC competition, totaled 26 hits through two games, including a 6-for-9 performance for
Kale Twombly with three doubles, his first home run as a Falcon, and five runs scored. UWRF closes out its 2025 home schedule this weekend, hosting No. 10-ranked UW-La Crosse at First National Bank of River Falls Field.
UW-Stout 12, UW-River Falls 9
With UWRF leading 9-8 heading to the bottom half of the ninth inning, the Blue Devils loaded the bases and Leyten Bowers hit a walk-off grand slam to lead UW-Stout to victory in game one.
After a scoreless first three innings, the UWRF offense was ignited by a six-run fourth inning with seven hits, including back-to-back homers from
JV Castillo and
Kale Twombly.
John Santelman,
Max Krebs, and
Tanner Hraby followed with RBI singles to give the Falcons a 6-0 lead.
The Blue Devils cut the Falcons lead in half in the bottom of the fourth, and continued to chip away, tying the game at 6-6 with a solo home run in the sixth inning. In the seventh, a Castillo RBI double and a
Cade Bruett sacrifice fly gave UWRF back the lead at 8-6, but the home team responded again with their second of three homers on the game to knot the score at 8-8 through eight innings.
In the ninth, Twombly doubled and came around to score off a
Max Stocco single to give UWRF a 9-8 lead, but the Blue Devils' grand slam in the bottom half secured the win.
UWRF out-hit UW-Stout 15-10, led by three hits each from Hraby and Twombly.

The Falcons started strong in the first inning, with
Andrew Athmann delivering a two-run single that brought home Twombly and Hraby, giving UWRF an early 2–0 lead. However, UW-Stout responded with a five-run bottom half and held on to a lead throughout.
UWRF continued to battle, adding two runs in the third inning with a
Colton Skoglund RBI double along with
JV Castillo stealing home, trimming the Blue Devil lead to 6-4. Yet, the Blue Devils' offense proved relentless, scoring in six of the eight innings they batted to lead by as many as eight runs in the fifth.
Twombly led the Falcons with his second-straight three-hit game, followed by a pair of hits from Santelman.
