Falcons swept by No. 1 Warhawks

RIVER FALLS, Wis. — The UW-River Falls baseball team was swept by the No. 1-ranked UW-Whitewater Warhawks Sunday afternoon at First National Bank of River Falls Field.

The top-ranked Warhawks, who totaled eight home runs through two games yesterday, continued to flex their muscles on Sunday as the home run barrage continued with nine more combined UW-Whitewater homers in games three and four.

The Falcons (8-9, 3-5 WIAC) continue conference play and remain at home on Wednesday, April 9, hosting a doubleheader versus UW-Stout at 1 p.m.

In game three of the weekend and first of Sunday's doubleheader, the Warhawks out-slugged the Falcons with 18 hits compared to UWRF's 11.

UWW hit a pair of homers in the first inning to earn an early 3-0 lead.

Trailing 8-1 in the fourth, the Falcons got on the board with a solo homer by Kole Paulsen – his first of the season.

Despite a 10-run deficit with the Warhawks threatening to end game one early, the Falcons fought back to extend the game with three runs off four hits, including a Max Krebs two-run home run and an RBI groundout from pinch hitter John Santelman to cut the score to 13-6 in favor of UWW heading into the ninth.

Whitewater pushed across two more runs in the top of the ninth and shut the door in the bottom half for the 15-6 win.

Cade Bruett started on the mound for UWRF and suffered the loss. Kale Twombly led the Falcons at the plate with three hits, including a pair of doubles. Paulsen and Connor Weltzien had two hits each.

UWRF totaled four runs off 10 hits and committed four errors which equated to five unearned runs for UWW.

The Falcons scored all of their runs in the bottom of the seventh off a two-run homer by Colton Skoglund - the first of his career, followed by a Carter Klein single and Warhawk error scoring Connor Ducklow and a Dillon Carrell RBI groundout.
