UW-River Falls Unveils 2025 Athletics Hall of Fame Class

RIVER FALLS, Wis. — The UW-River Falls Athletics Hall of Fame Committee has announced the class of 2025 inductees – Katie Batters (women's hockey), Hayley Buchanan (softball/volleyball), Woody Fangmeier (football), Jim Henkemeyer (men's hockey), Kait Mason (women's hockey), Mark Meydam (positive contributor), Greg Olson (football), Nick Zeien (men's cross country/track & field), and the 1984-87 football teams.

Katie Batters – Women's Hockey – 2010-14
Batters, a Champlin, Minn., native, was a three-time AHCA All-American and All-NCHA forward for the Falcons from 2010-14, compiling 114 career points with 68 goals and 46 assists. During her four years at UWRF, the Falcons won a trio of Northern Collegiate Hockey Association regular season championships (2011, 2012, 2013), the NCHA Tournament title in 2012, and the WIAC regular season and O'Brien Cup championships in 2014. A team captain, she helped lead the Falcons to four straight NCAA Tournament appearances, achieving the program's first third place title in 2014 as the Falcons defeated the University of St. Thomas 5-3 in Plattsburgh, N.Y. Batters' 114 career points ranks 11th all-time at UWRF while her 68 goals ranks eighth as she led the team in goals from 2012-14, including a career-high 21 goals in 2013. 

Hayley Buchanan – Softball/Volleyball – 2009-13
A two-sport athlete, Buchanan is from Eden Prairie, Minn., and played four years of softball as an infielder from 2010-13 and was a setter on the volleyball team from 2009-12.

Buchanan played in 169 career games for the Falcons on the diamond and accumulated a .395 batting average. A four-time All-WIAC honoree (2010-11 Honorable Mention, 2012-13 First Team), she is UWRF's all-time leader with 223 hits and 564 at bats. A two-time Great Lakes Region First Team second baseman, Buchanan and the Falcons won the WIAC regular season championship in 2011 along with back-to-back WIAC tournament titles and NCAA Tournament appearances in 2011 & 2012. In 2012, UWRF set a program record with 34 wins and reached the NCAA tournament regional finals where she was selected to the All-Regional Team. Named the team's 'Best Defensive Player' four years in a row, she ranks second all-time in the program's record book with 354 assists.

On the volleyball court, Buchanan was named the team's 'hardest worker' for three seasons in a row. She tallied 1,138 career assists and 657 career digs, helping lead the Falcons to a trio of WIAC Tournament appearances.

Woody Fangmeier – Football – 1993-96
A four-year defensive lineman for the Falcons from 1993-96, Fangmeier is from St. Croix Falls, Wis., and is UWRF's program leader with 29 career sacks - ranking third all-time in the WIAC, totaling 31 tackles for loss and forcing seven fumbles (2nd all-time at UWRF) in 38 career games played. A three-time All-WIAC selection, Fangmeier and the Falcons reached the NCAA playoffs in 1995 and 1996, reaching the quarterfinals in 1995 and a 9-1 record in 1996 to set a program record for wins. Named the team's 'Best Defensive Player' in both 1995-96, he totaled double-digit sacks in both seasons and was named an All-American during his senior season.

Fangmeier passed away at the age of 50 in August of 2024 after a five-year fight with cancer.

Jim Henkemeyer – Men's Hockey – 2004-08
Henkemeyer, a four-year defender for the Falcons, was a two-time AHCA All-American in 2007 & 2008, a three-time All-WIAC honoree (2006 Honorable Mention, 2007-08 First Team), and was selected to the WIAC men's hockey All-Time Team. Appearing in 95 career games at UWRF, the St. Cloud, Minn., native totaled 68 points with 18 goals and 50 assists to rank among the program's top 10 leading scorers among defensemen. In his time wearing the red & white, Henkemeyer and the Falcons won four consecutive WIAC regular season championships from 2004-08, including an NCAA Tournament appearance during the 2006-07 season. He was the team's top scoring defender during his junior and senior seasons, including a career-high 28 points in 27 games in 2007-08.

Kait Mason – Women's Hockey – 2010-14
From 2010-14, Mason skated in 120 games for the Falcons and totaled 132 career points with 69 goals and 63 assists to rank among the program's top 10 career scoring leaders. A three-time First Team All-Conference forward, the Eagan, Minn., native helped lead the Falcons to a trio of Northern Collegiate Hockey Association regular season championships (2011, 2012, 2013), the NCHA Tournament title in 2012, and the WIAC regular season and O'Brien Cup championships in 2014. A team captain, she helped lead the Falcons to four straight NCAA Tournament appearances, achieving the program's first third place title in 2014 as the Falcons defeated the University of St. Thomas 5-3 in Plattsburgh, N.Y. Mason was the Falcons' leading scorer in both 2011 and 2013 with 40 and 36 points respectively, earning AHCA All-America laurels in both seasons.

Mark Meydam – Positive Contributor
Meydam is a 1985 UW-River Falls graduate and spent nearly 40 years at UWRF from 1985-2020, working in the admissions office as a counselor, assistant director, and senior institutional planner. A Fremont, Wis., native, he received the Chancellor's Award for Excellence, highest honor given to academic staff at UWRF in 1994. For over 30 years, Meydam has served as a volunteer on the athletics event staff as a statistician and scoreboard operator at Falcon football and basketball games.

Greg Olson – Football – 1985-88
A three-time All-WIAC offensive lineman, Olson and the Falcons won three straight WIAC Championships from 1985-87, with Olson serving as a catalyst for the 1986 team who led NCAA Division III with 361.4 rushing yards per game. A team captain in 1998, the Red Wing, Minn., native capped off his career earning First Team All-Conference and First Team All-America honors by Football Gazette as UWRF compiled its fourth consecutive winning season. During his career as a Falcon, the team had a 30-6 overall record and 24-7 conference ledger.

Nick Zeien – Men's Cross Country/Track & Field – 2006-11
A native of Hastings, Minn., Zeien competed for UWRF men's cross country and track & field from 2006, 2008-11. He holds the program record in the 800-meter run in both indoor and outdoor track and was a member of the indoor 4x400 and outdoor 4x800 record-setting teams. Zeien ranks in the UWRF top-10 record book in the indoor 600 meters, outdoor 1,500 meters, outdoor 400 meters, and outdoor 4x400.
 
Zeien is a six-time All-American, earning the honors four times in the 800 meters (three indoor, one outdoor). He also competed on the UWRF indoor 4x400 teams in 2010 and 2011 that claimed All-American status. In 2009, Zeien earned Second-Team All-WIAC in the indoor 800 meters, placing second at the meet with a time of 1:54.8. Just one year later, Zeien finished as the runner-up with a time of 1:53.3 to claim Second-Team All-WIAC. At the 2010 NCAA Indoor Championships, Zeien placed second overall in the 800m with a time of 1:52.61, finishing just .02 seconds off the first-place runner.

Football – 1984-87
From 1984 to 1987, the UW-River Falls football program enjoyed one of its most dominant stretches in school history, winning four consecutive WIAC championships - outright in 1985 and shared in 1984, 1986, and 1987. Led by legendary head coach Mike Farley, who was named WIAC Coach of the Year in 1986, UWRF produced nearly 50 All-Conference selections in four seasons and had the back-to-back WIAC Scholar Athlete honoree in Mark Farley Jr. in 1984 and 1985. Among them included 2025 UWRF Hall of Fame class member Greg Olson, and running back Greg Corning - a three-time First Team All-WIAC selection, the 1987 WIAC Player of the Year, and an AFCA First Team All-American, who later earned spots in the WIAC Hall of Fame, WIAC All-Time Team, and UWRF Hall of Fame. This era also saw future UWRF Hall of Famers such as Jim Benick, Steve Frantl, Mark Cota, Matt Renn, and Clark Luessman to help cement a golden age of Falcon football excellence.
