NORTHFIELD, Minn. — The UW-River Falls men's soccer team opened its 2025 season with a 3-1 loss at Carleton College.
The Knights scored twice in the first half and despite a strong push from the Falcons during the final 45 minutes, the home team prevailed.
In a tight first half, Carleton struck twice. Ben Pennell opened the scoring at the 25th minute, followed by a rebound goal by Luke Brown 19 minutes later, leading two a two-goal cushion for the home team at half time.
After the break, the Falcons came alive. Midfielder Sorel Richardson scored UWRF's first of the season from 28 yards out, cutting the Knights' deficit in half and sparking the comeback hopes. However, Carleton remained composed and added a late goal to seal the win.
UWRF led 8-6 in second half shots while Carleton finished with a 15-12 advantage. The Falcons held a 6-3 edge in corner kicks.
Josh Bates, a graduate student transfer from UW-Eau Claire, made his first start in net for the Falcons and played all 90 minutes while tallying three saves.
