RIVER FALLS, Wis. – The UW-River Falls men's soccer team battled but fell 3-0 to No. 5-ranked Augsburg University in a non-conference matchup at Smith Stadium on Monday, Sept. 22.
The loss drops the Falcons to 3-3-1 overall, while the Auggies maintain their undefeated record, improving to 10-0-0.
Augsburg struck early, with Carver Tierney finding the back of the net in the eighth minute for his 10th goal of the season, giving the Auggies a 1-0 advantage. Despite the early deficit, the Falcons responded with offensive pressure with five shots in the first half. Sorel Richardson, Daniel Pirillo and the rest of the frontline tested Augsburg goalkeeper Christian Hodges, keeping the match competitive.
The second half saw Augsburg extend their lead. Diego Veit doubled the advantage in the 66th minute, assisted by Mitchel Munzing, before Asher Johnson sealed the 3-0 victory with an unassisted goal in the 81st minute.
The Falcons held their own against the nationally ranked Auggies, finishing with 12 shots, four on goal, compared to Augsburg's 13 shots and six on goal. Sorel Richardson led UWRF with four shots, while Daniel Pirillo and Ben Harris each added two. Goalkeeper Josh Bates made three saves in the effort.
The Falcons look to rebound when they travel to Decorah, Iowa, to face Luther College on Friday, Sept. 26.
