RIVER FALLS, Wis. – The No. 1-ranked UW-River Falls women's hockey team earned a convincing 5-0 victory over No. 8/11-ranked Gustavus Adolphus College Tuesday night at Hunt Arena.
With their 10th win in a row, the Falcons swept the regular season series against the rival Gusties, improving to 14-1 overall.
UWRF scored twice in the opening period to seize control. Madison Kadrlik opened the scoring at the 5:44 mark of the first, deflecting a Kaitlyn Ronn shot from the points for the eventual game-winner. Sophia Hess doubled the lead just under four minutes later to give the Falcons a 2-0 advantage after one.
The Falcons extended the margin early in the second period, capitalizing on a carryover power play. Hess notched her second goal of the night just 42 seconds in, converting on the man advantage with helpers from Alexa Niccum and Megan Goodreau. Brooklyn Riley added another power play tally midway through the period, pushing the lead to 4-0.
River Falls capped the scoring in the third period with its third power play goal of the night. Riley scored her second of the contest at 9:57, sealing the 5-0 result.
Jordan O'Kane was sharp between the pipes for the Falcons, stopping all 20 shots she faced to earn her fourth shutout of the season. UWRF outshot Gustavus 34-20 and finished 3-for-5 on the power play, while holding the Gusties scoreless on three opportunities.
Hess and Riley each recorded two-goal performances, while Goodreau led all players with four assists, along with three assists from Aure.
UWRF (14-1, 2-1 WIAC) heads back into conference play this weekend with a home and home series against UW-Superior. The Falcons travel to UW-Superior Friday evening before hosting the Yellowjackets on Saturday afternoon. Saturday, Jan. 17 is UWRF Employee Appreciation Day (free admission to employees and their families with valid UWRF ID).
