RIVER FALLS, Wis. — The UW-River Falls men's hockey team and No. 14-ranked St. Olaf College skated to a 2-2 tie Friday night at Hunt Arena, with both teams trading goals in the opening two periods before scoreless third and overtime frames.
The Falcons, now 7-8-1 overall, opened the scoring just over a minute into the contest as
Alex Atwill threw the puck on net from a tough angle to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead.
St. Olaf evened the score early in the second period when Willy Johnson scored at the 4:10 mark. The Falcons responded midway through the period, capitalizing on the power play as
Keenan Ingram buried his team and WIAC-leading 12th goal of the season, with Atwill assisting for his second point of the night to restore UWRF's one-goal advantage.
The Oles answered again just over two minutes later. Joey Kennelly tied the game at 10:18 of the second period, scoring at even strength to make it 2-2.
Both teams had chances to break the deadlock the rest of the way, but strong defensive play and goaltending kept the score unchanged through the third period and two overtime sessions.
Brennan Boynton made 24 saves in goal for the Falcons, while Ryan Nolan stopped 40 shots for St. Olaf. UWRF finished 1-for-4 on the power play, turned away all four Ole power play chances, and won the faceoff battle, 37-30.
The Falcons host Saint Mary's University tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. Saturday is UWRF Employee Appreciation Day (free admission to employees and their families with valid UWRF ID).
