No. 1 Falcons Hold Off Yellowjackets for 4-2 win

RIVER FALLS, Wis. — The No. 1-ranked UW-River Falls women's hockey team used a pair of power-play goals and a three-goal cushion through two periods to earn a 4-2 victory over UW-Superior on Saturday afternoon at Hunt Arena.

UWRF, now 16-1 overall and 4-1 during WIAC play, opened the scoring midway through the first period when Megan Goodreau capitalized on the Falcons' first power play chance of the game, finishing a setup from Cahlilah Lindquist and Alexa Niccum.

The Falcons extended the advantage late in the second period. Sophia Hess made it 2-0 at 15:51, converting a feed from Goodreau and Brooklyn Riley at even strength. Less than three minutes later, Madison Kadrlik added what proved to be the game-winning goal at 18:38, burying a chance off assists from Kylie Jones and Gracyn Knowles to send UWRF into the second intermission with a 3-0 lead.

UW-Superior answered early in the third period with goals just over a minute apart. Jaelyn Wharton scored at 5:31, and Kendal Gustavsson followed with an unassisted goal at 6:40 to cut the Falcon lead to 3-2 and bring the Yellowjackets back into the contest.

UWRF responded on the power play late in the third period to regain control. Goodreau netted her second goal of the game at 15:17, again with the man advantage, off assists from Riley and Lindquist to restore a two-goal cushion and seal the 4-2 win.

Goodreau finished the afternoon with two goals and an assist, while Riley and Lindquist both recorded two assists.

With her two power play goals, Megan Goodreau tied a WIAC record and broke a UWRF single-season record with her 12th power play tally. She surpassed the previous mark of 10, set by Kora Torkelson during the 2021-22 season.

In goal, Olivia Hansen earned the win for UW-River Falls, stopping 12 shots in 46:40 of action. Jordan O'Kane added relief minutes in the third period, making three saves.

UWRF won the faceoff battle 44-16 and outshot UWS 40-17 for the game.

The Falcons continue WIAC play next weekend at Beloit College in Janesville, Wis.
