Falcons Return to WIAC Semifinals for First Time Since 2017

The UW-River Falls women's basketball team is headed back to the WIAC Tournament semifinals for the first time since 2017 after grinding out a 42-40 victory over UW-Platteville Monday night. The win marked the Falcons' third victory this season over the Pioneers, with all three facing a top-25 ranked Platteville squad.

River Falls will once again meet a familiar postseason foe. This year's matchup sends the No. 4-seeded Falcons to Oshkosh to take on the top-seeded Titans. The Falcons' last semifinal appearance in 2017 also came against UW-Oshkosh.

THE SERIES

UW-Oshkosh won both regular-season meetings between the two programs. In the first matchup on Jan. 17, the then-No. 3 ranked Titans claimed a 65-33 win in River Falls. The rematch on Feb. 7 in Oshkosh resulted in a 69-47 decision, as the Titans used a strong first half to build separation and maintained the lead until the final buzzer.

FALCON NOTES

Senior guard Zoey Buchan continues to pace the Falcons offensively, averaging 14.7 points per game overall and 16.1 points per contest in WIAC play. River Falls has leaned on its perimeter attack throughout the season, connecting on 191 three-pointers (7.3 per game) while forcing 15.5 turnovers per contest.

Fresh off a defensive battle in the first round, the Falcons will look to continue that effort into Wednesday night's semifinal as they attempt to upset the conference's top seed and advance to the WIAC Tournament Championship game for the first time since 2016.
