DULUTH, Minn. – The UW-River Falls men's soccer team broke through in the closing minutes Tuesday afternoon, defeating the College of St. Scholastica 1-0 at Kenny Harkins Field.
Sam Everakes scored the game-winning goal with just four minutes remaining off an assist from Ilya Lalich, while the Falcon defense held the Saints without a shot on goal to secure the shutout. Their victory improves the Falcons to 4-4-1 on the season.
The Falcons controlled much of the match, finishing with a 22-3 advantage in shots, placing 12 attempts on goal. UWRF held a 9-4 edge in corner kicks, with all nine Falcon corners coming during the second half.
After a scoreless opening half, UWRF continued to apply the pressure with Ben Harris forcing a save just over a minute into the second half before Mauricio Cuevas and Hunter Berry each tested St. Scholastica goalkeeper Dylan Gies. The Falcons generated six corner kicks during the opening 11 minutes of the half as they continued searching for the game's opening goal.
Sorel Richardson, Carter Eklund, Elijah Lund and Everakes all put shots on target, but Gies kept the match scoreless with 11 total saves. The game winning goal arrived at the 85:11 mark. Following a Falcon corner, Everakes found the back of the net with Lalich picking up the assist, giving UWRF the 1-0 advantage with less than five minutes remaining. The Falcons held St. Scholastica without another shot the rest of the way to seal the road victory.
Everakes finished with two shots, both on goal, including his game-winner. Harris led UWRF with five shots, while Lund totaled four. Greyson Shiek played all 90 minutes in goal and earned the shutout as the Falcon defense limited the Saints to just three total shots and none on frame.
The Falcons continue their road stretch Sunday, Sept. 27, traveling to Moorhead, Minn., to face Concordia College.
